Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Data Scientist to join its Global Research and Data Science (GRDS) team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead impactful data science and machine learning projects that advance global development. In this role, you will collaborate with an international team to drive technical innovation, mentor colleagues, and contribute to cutting-edge research using advanced data science techniques like predictive modeling, NLP, and LLMs.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Data Science Projects: Develop and optimize scalable data infrastructure, pipelines, and machine learning solutions using NLP and large language models.
  • Mentor and Innovate: Mentor team members, foster a culture of innovation, and lead the development of training on advanced data science tools and methods.
  • Collaborate with International Partners: Manage strategic partnerships with IPA country offices and sector teams, contributing to high-impact, often ambiguous projects.
  • Contribute to Research Resources: Create original code, provide technical assistance to research projects, and represent IPA in the data science community.

Requirements:

  • Essential:
    • 4+ years of experience in data science or engineering.
    • Expertise in Python, SQL, and version control systems like Git.
    • 2+ years with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
    • Experience integrating diverse data sources and working with APIs.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with sensitivity to diverse, multicultural teams.
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics).
  • Preferred:
    • Proficiency in applied machine learning, NLP, and data storytelling.
    • Experience with ELT tools (e.g., dbt, SQLMesh), econometric software (e.g., R, Stata), and project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana).
    • Background in international development or research institutions.
    • Multilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish, French, Swahili) and familiarity with ICT for development concepts.

Work Model: Hybrid remote + country office environment with international travel (1-2 times per year).
