Employment Type: Hybrid (Remote + Country Office)
Reports To: Sr. Director of Global Research and Data Science

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is seeking a passionate Data Scientist to join its Global Research and Data Science (GRDS) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to drive technical innovation in global development by applying cutting-edge data science techniques. You’ll collaborate with a diverse, international team to transform complex data into actionable insights using tools such as Python, SQL, and cloud computing platforms. Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Science Development:
    • Build and maintain SQL and Python data models for research projects.
    • Develop custom code and solutions for data analysis and software development.
    • Review and test code to ensure quality and functionality.
  • Technical Assistance:
    • Provide direct technical support for IPA research projects.
    • Collaborate with IPA country offices and global teams to plan, implement, and complete research initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Present analysis and updates to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Provide regular updates on the progress of projects and data science products.
  • Research Contributions:
    • Develop resources to support project management for research initiatives.
    • Apply advanced techniques like machine learning and natural language processing (NLP).

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in data science or data engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and version control systems like Git.
  • Familiarity with integrating data sources using APIs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and respect for diversity in multicultural environments.

Preferred:

  • Experience with NLP techniques and large language models (LLMs).
  • Knowledge of data engineering tools like dbt, SQLMesh, or dlt.
  • Familiarity with econometrics tools (R, Stata) and research standards.
  • Experience with international development organizations.
  • Proficiency in an additional language (Spanish, French, or Swahili).

Work Model: Hybrid, with occasional international travel (1–2 times per year).
