Job Description

Canonical is seeking a highly experienced Senior Security Operations Engineer to provide leadership across security operations and engineering initiatives. This role focuses on strengthening security capabilities, evolving the Security Operations Center, and contributing to open-source security efforts while working within a distributed, agile engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational and engineering leadership across security operations activities
  • Implement, manage, and continuously improve Canonical’s Security Operations Center (SOC)
  • Design, build, and maintain security software, tools, and platforms
  • Monitor, detect, respond to, and remediate security incidents across systems and infrastructure
  • Assess existing security controls and recommend improvements to reduce risk
  • Mentor and support early-career Security Operations Engineers
  • Plan and deliver security initiatives within an agile engineering framework
  • Contribute to open-source security projects and technical publications
  • Produce blog posts, whitepapers, and conference presentations on security topics

Requirements

  • Strong academic background with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative career pathway
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience
  • Proven cybersecurity experience, ideally within or leading a Security Operations Center
  • Demonstrated professional engineering experience
  • Strong interest in contributing to open-source security initiatives
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and Bash
  • Working knowledge of Git, GitOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes

Additional Skills (Optional but Advantageous)

  • Familiarity with security frameworks including NIST CSF, CIS CSC, and ISO 27001
  • Experience with security architecture and industry-leading security tools
  • Background in offensive or defensive security with hands-on expertise
  • Experience handling advanced persistent threats (APTs)
  • Proficiency in additional programming languages such as Golang
