M-KOPA is hiring a Research Scientist to support its mission of accelerating digital and financial inclusion across Africa. This remote position offers the opportunity to work on impactful machine learning research while developing real-world solutions that increase financial access. Candidates will collaborate with global teams and contribute to cutting-edge innovations in generative AI.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and refine generative AI models (such as VAEs, GANs, and diffusion models) tailored to financial inclusion challenges.
• Design prototypes and iterate on models for credit risk, customer behavior, and related applications.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Africa and Europe to implement scalable ML solutions.
• Publish high-impact research in top-tier conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI) while addressing real-world problems.

Requirements:

• Strong hands-on experience or academic background in generative models (VAEs, GANs, diffusion models).
• Solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and theoretical computer science.
• Demonstrated experience with deep learning, reinforcement learning, or specialized ML domains.
• Familiarity with structured and unstructured datasets.
• Proven track record of translating research into scalable and impactful algorithms.
• A history of peer-reviewed publications in machine learning is an added advantage.
