Job Description

The Head of Controls role is responsible for leading and strengthening the control environment across South Africa and West & Central Africa partner markets. The position ensures effective governance, risk management, and compliance through the implementation of CARM frameworks, control testing, assurance activities, and continuous improvement initiatives. It serves as the primary custodian of control excellence within the SWC cluster and plays a critical role in enabling compliant and efficient business operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and strengthen the overall controls environment across SWC, ensuring alignment with global standards and local market requirements
  • Own and maintain the CARM framework, including annual risk-based scoping, testing cycles, and remediation tracking
  • Oversee in-market assurance activities, including deep dives into high-risk processes to assess control design and effectiveness
  • Review and embed controls into business change initiatives such as system implementations, restructures, and commercial transformations
  • Provide governance oversight by ensuring control ownership is clearly defined and consistently applied across all markets
  • Develop and deliver training programs on controls, governance, and compliance to improve capability across teams
  • Communicate control updates, insights, and policy changes to drive awareness and accountability across stakeholders

Requirements

  • Chartered Accountant (ACCA, CPA, or equivalent professional qualification)
  • 8–12+ years of experience in internal controls, audit, assurance, or finance roles
  • Strong understanding of CARM, SOX, COSO frameworks, and financial control design principles
  • Experience working across multi-market or regional environments is an added advantage
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and investigative skills
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex control concepts
